Road Closures and Detours around Destination: Grand
As progress continues on the Destination: Grand new hospital tower construction, there are a few upcoming road closures and detours to be aware of—especially near the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion.
June Roadwork
Looking ahead, Sterling Street will close between W. Milwaukee Avenue and the alley north of Holden Street beginning in June. This closure will last through late 2026. Work will also begin in June on Holden Street to rebuild the viaduct and improve drainage, and Holden will reopen to traffic in July.
Hospital Tower Progress
Exciting progress continues at the new hospital site with steel work starting in May.
- A large crane will be assembled on site beginning May 1 that will be used to hoist the new building’s steel superstructure into place.
- Truckloads of structural steel will start arriving May 8, with the first 50-foot steel column (weighing around 3.5 tons!) scheduled to be installed on May 12, weather permitting.
- Watch this latest video to get caught up on all that’s happened – and what’s to come this summer and beyond.

The Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center is on target to complete structural steel placement by early July.
